Pilea Apartments

Anchoring community in the heart of Preston.

Crafted suburban architecture and heritage inspired landscapes shaping community in Preston.

Pilea is a community shaped by heritage landscaping, suburban character, and a belief that architecture can nurture belonging.

With a clear vision to create thoughtful, medium-density homes Pilea is imagined as a place where community can grow, with the everyday ease of a backyard and the richness of life woven in.

By placing parking below ground, the site opens generously to greenery and shared space. Courtyards, footpaths, and landscaped gardens designed by Jack Merlo invite neighbours to pause, connect, and enjoy the outdoors together. Inspired by Europe’s heritage gardens and resonating with the lead architect’s own heritage the landscape balances formality with warmth, creating spaces that feel both timeless and inviting.

Private gardens flow seamlessly from living rooms, while large terraces extend daily life into the open air celebrating Melbourne’s love of light, gatherings, and the rhythm of the seasons. Inside, the planning is open and generous, designed for comfort, efficiency, and adaptability over time.

The architecture draws on the enduring charm of the Australian suburb. Sand-toned, hand-made brick and light pitched roofs offer a simple, honest materiality grounding the homes in place.

“Designing Pilea drew deep into my personal connection to Melbourne’s North shaping homes with effortless access to the culture, community and everyday rhythm of the area.”
